How to Use Your One-Rep Max in Training
Your one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single repetition of an exercise with proper form. You rarely need to test a true max in the gym — estimated 1RM from submaximal sets works well for programming — but understanding that number unlocks smarter training: percentage-based loads, progress tracking, and deload weeks that actually recover you instead of guessing.

Signs you need a deload include persistent joint ache, missed reps that were easy weeks ago, and poor sleep despite consistent training.
Autoregulation tools — RPE (rate of perceived exertion) and RIR (reps in reserve) — complement percentage training. If 75% feels like RPE 9.5 instead of the usual 7, stop or reduce load that day rather than chasing numbers on a bad recovery day.
Fueling strength work with nutrition
Heavy training increases protein needs and total calorie demand. Lifting in a large calorie deficit can stall 1RM progress even when technique improves — you are asking the nervous system and muscle to perform with limited fuel.
